The Remarkable Ifould Family of Steep

by Fran Box

pub Steep Local History Publications 2021

Richard Ifould was the first member of the Ifould family to come to Steep. He arrived perhaps around 1800, possibly a little before that date. He married Elizabeth Etherington of Hawkley. Richard worked as an agricultural labourer. They lived in a squatter’s cottage that they built for themselves at the western end of what was a much larger area of common land at that time. They had at least seven children. Several of these and these and their descendants went on to do remarkable things or to have interesting stories.

The book tells the story of the various members of this family, of their houses, and their achievements in Steep and elsewhere. Their story is also more than that, as it is a also reflection of the lives of agricultural labourers in Hampshire and Sussex in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
