The History of the Humby Family of Gosport by Fran Box pub 2026
Back cover of The History of the Humby Family of Steep book

This book is not about the history of Steep, but is a history of Fran’s own family from Gosport – watermen, mariners and more.

The Humby family sprang from humble agricultural origins around Titchfield and then made the bold step of joining the watermen and mariners of Gosport. Enduring hardships, they came together to support each other and move forward. The family would become one of the key founders of the Gosport Ferry Company. Others travelled afar and saw years of loyal service in the Royal Navy and the Army. Research revealed captivating stories of those who were intricately bound to the water and the sea, of their families, wives and children, and of those who went further. Each member has their own memorable story. There are glimpses too of the colourful and long vanished life in the small alleys and courts of the old Gosport town.
